Coalition of Hope Foundation (COH)

Project Background:

  • Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) drones are a small subset of an aviation market that is set to see massive expansion into electric and hybrid craft.

  • Coalition of Hope seeks to use an eVTOL drone to assist in its humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR) applications.

Project Summary:

  • Work with a small team to design a modular eVTOL drone for HADR applications with the goal of taking off and landing from Landing Helicopter Assault (LHA) ships retrofitted as floating hospitals.

Design Steps:

  • Performed background research on the state of eVTOL craft and summarized results in an internal literature review.

  • Designed and created marketing concepts using Solidworks and Blender.

  • Tested proof of concept designs using Solidworks' computational fluid dynamics simulator.

Challenges:

  • Aerospace engineering was a new and advanced application of the mechanical engineering knowledge I had studied in school. Therefore I had to quickly teach myself an immense amount of information to effectively contribute to the project.

Results:

  • Multiple design versions and iterations were developed for conceptual purposes.

  • Work is still ongoing at COH determine an effective design that will help revolutionize COH's ability to provide aid to those in need.
